South Australian pokie players losing more

AUSTRALIA – As reported by the Adelaide Now: "South Australian gamblers are on track to lose more than $800 million on poker machines this financial year.

"Anti-pokies campaigners warn losses could be as high as $1 billion within three years unless more steps are taken to combat problem gambling.

"The losses - an average of $4993 a machine - continue to mount despite reductions in the number of machines and venues in SA, and smoking bans in hotels and clubs.

"The figures do not include losses on gaming machines at the Sky City casino, which has more than 800 machines.

"Last year, the casino reported gaming revenue of $114 million, but did not detail how much of that came from poker machines.

"…Poker machine venues - there are 576 compared with 597 at the same time in 2005-06 - have collected $242 million, up from $232.5 million for the same time the year before…"
