South African gambling board head axed

SOUTH AFRICA -- As reported by the South Africa Daily Dispatch: "Former Eastern Cape Gambling and Betting Board chairman Sipho Majombozi's contract has not been renewed.

"This emerged last week when the newly-appointed board was grilled by the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) over its finances for the 2006/7 financial year.

"In his audit report for the 2006/7 financial year, Auditor-General Singa Ngqwala disputed that Majombozi should have been chairperson in the first place as he was also heading up a Gauteng branch of the ANC.

"...The provincial Gambling Act bars anyone who is an office bearer or employee of a political party from being appointed to the board.

"Asked whether Majombozi was an office bearer of a political party while he was the board's chairman, the board confirmed that he had been the secretary for the ANC's Bram Fischer branch in Randburg, Gauteng..."
