South African Cops Accused of Blackmailing Casinos29 March 2004SOUTH AFRICA – As reported by the South Africa Sunday Times: "Two policemen who allegedly extorted bribes from owners of illegal casinos in the south Peninsula for years have been caught in a police trap. "Former sergeant John Thomas and André Lekas, a former constable, were arrested after, the state claims, they forged a search warrant to gain access to a shop in Wynberg and seized three illegal gambling machines containing about R1 500. "…Apart from the alleged seizure of the machines, the two men are facing 10 other charges in the Wynberg Regional Court. The charges are of extortion, corruption, fraud and defeating the ends of justice. "…The two men were based at Steenberg Police Station at the time but have since been dismissed after being found guilty by an internal disciplinary hearing…" |
