South African Casino Workers on Strike

SOUTH AFRICA – As reported by Finance24: "About 900 Food and Allied Workers Union members were on strike at Johannesburg's Emperor's Palace casino complex on Wednesday, Fawu said.

"General secretary Katishi Masemola said the strike and pickets were in support of above-inflation wage increases.

"Workers were seeking monetary increases, not percentage increases, and these translated to roughly 8% for the highest paid and 17% for the lowest paid workers.

"The company's offers ranged from 6.5% for the highest paid to 10% for the lowest paid workers.

"…About 95% of the 1 200 workers in that region's bargaining unit were on strike. They performed a range of duties from catering to skilled artisans…"
