Some Locals Cool Towards Pittsburgh Casino

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania – As reported by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: "A casino is coming to Pittsburgh, but some Hill District residents aren't too keen about having it in their neighborhood.

"During a community forum last night, several people spoke out against the idea of having a casino near their homes, saying it could be another body blow to a neighborhood struggling to right itself.

"…The task force, a coalition of Hill District community development, faith-based and human service organizations, sponsored last night's forum at the Hill House Kaufmann Auditorium to find out how people felt about the three bids for the Pittsburgh casino license and the promises being made to the neighborhood as part of that competition.

"Two bidders -- Isle of Capri Casinos Inc. and PITG Gaming LLC -- are proposing at least $350 million in development near Mellon Arena in the lower Hill. Isle of Capri, which wants to put its casino in the Hill-Uptown area, also is offering $1 million a year for a community investment fund and $290 million toward a new arena.

"The other bidder, Forest City Enterprises, with a proposed Station Square casino, isn't offering specific reinvestment in the Hill, but is proposing $1 million a year for a foundation for community development and a $25 million endowment for neighborhood reinvestment…"
