Smoking Ban In Canadian Aboriginal Casinos Called Unlikely

REGINA, Canada -- As reported by the Canadian Press: "A grace period on enforcing tough new smoking legislation in Saskatchewan will allow more time for the government to negotiate with aboriginals to approve new smoking rules for casinos, a native leader says.

"Alphonse Bird, chief of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations, said it is unlikely that native bands will agree to enforce the provincewide ban on smoking in public places in native-run casinos when the ban takes effect on Jan 1.

"But Mr. Bird said a 60-day grace period on enforcement announced by the province will allow more time for the government and the federation to reach a deal for new rules that would restrict smoking on reserves and in the casinos.

"'Personally, I think smoke rooms would be a good thing for our communities. It gives a clean atmosphere and a choice for those who choose to smoke,' Mr. Bird said.

"The federation has indicated it will likely not follow the provincial law in the casinos, and the province has said it does not have jurisdiction to force compliance on reserves..."
