Small California Tribe Wants Casino

CALIFORNIA – As reported by the San Francisco Chronicle: "Up the serpentine Highway 1, members of a tiny American Indian tribe foster a dream of a casino to lift them out of decades of poverty.

"The Kashia Band of Pomo Indians is contemplating building a small casino in the coastal hills of Sonoma County about 4 miles east of Stewarts Point -- up a winding road so narrow there is scant room for a median strip.

"Some of the Kashia tribal members hope a casino on their 40-acre reservation will turn the tide on tough times. Old

"…Not everyone, however, is enthusiastic. About 100 members of the tribe live on the reservation, and another 400 Kashia Indians are scattered around California and Washington. Whether the casino becomes a reality may well depend on who wins tribal elections, to be held in early this month, for chairman, vice chairman, secretary, treasurer and other offices. Some of the candidates support the casino venture, while others are staunchly opposed, according to tribal members.

"At their last meeting in September, tribal members decided to explore the possibility of teaming up with Las Vegas backers. If an agreement is reached, the Kashia would be Sonoma County's fifth federally recognized tribe taking part in California's new gaming bonanza. Sonoma County Supervisor Mike Reilly, whose district includes the rolling west county where the reservation is located, said the Kashia explored other economic ventures, including manufacturing, to attract jobs…"
