Slots to Boost Pennsylvania Coffers by Billions

PITTSBURGH – As reported by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: "Legalized slot machines may still be a year away in Pennsylvania, but many local gamblers are already players.

"Slot machines, poker, sports betting and other casino-style games are just a few keystrokes and clicks of a computer mouse away in home offices, living rooms and anywhere else there is Internet access.

"But unlike online gambling, Pennsylvania's legal gaming -- the state lottery, pari-mutuel betting on horse races and small games of chance held as fundraisers for nonprofit organizations -- makes money for the state.

"Steve Kniley, spokesman for the state's Department of Revenue, said the state receives taxes on winnings paid to bettors as well as standard business and sales taxes assessed at the tracks.

"State officials estimate the slot machines will generate at least $3 billion in revenue and generate about $1 billion in taxes from the associated economic growth. Officials say they aren't sure just how much money state residents gamble online…"
