Slots May Fund Pittsburgh Arena

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania – As reported by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: "Regardless of where a slots casino ends up in Pittsburgh, Mayor Tom Murphy said yesterday he would like to see a portion of the revenue used to finance the construction of a new arena.

"During an interview after a Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership news conference, Murphy said he has talked to Gov. Ed Rendell as well as some of the possible competitors for the slots license about the idea of dedicating at least some revenue to help fund a new facility.

"The Penguins already have announced their intention to pursue the one slots license available in Pittsburgh for a stand-alone casino and to use the revenues to build a new hockey arena.

"However, Murphy would like to see a portion of the revenue dedicated for that purpose even if the Penguins lose their bid and a casino ends up at Station Square, on the North Shore or in some other part of the city.

"…Under the state's new slots gambling law, the city is allowed one stand-alone casino with up to 5,000 slots machine..."
