Slots Get Software Boost10 November 2004ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey – As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "They are a far cry from the old, mechanical one-armed bandits that would spin combinations of fruit icons with mind-numbing regularity. "Indeed, for a glimpse of the slot machines of the future, just take a look at the dazzling, multimedia video games popular with teenagers. "These 'downloadable games' will soon appear in California casinos and should make their way to the East Coast by next year, gaming experts told an industry conference Tuesday. "Linked to a central server like a computer, the high-tech slot machines are fed by a 'game library' that allows casinos to change the action whenever they want to - giving gamblers more variety and excitement while placing bets. "…Computer software allows the slot machines to be changed instantly to new games or different betting limits. For instance, nickel slots could become dollar bets and game themes could be switched to accommodate holidays or other special events. "In addition, casinos could tailor the slots to fit the largely senior-citizen crowds that pack the gaming halls during the day, then switch to different games at night for younger gamblers.
