Slots Approved for Vancouver's Plaza of Nations Casino3 December 2003VANCOUVER, British Columbia – As reported by the Province: "City council opened the doors for slot machines in Vancouver yesterday by narrowly passing a motion to hold a public hearing to allow slots at a casino at the Plaza of Nations. "Council voted 6-5 to proceed with the hearing after a staff report recommended allowing the casino to have 600 slots and 60 gaming tables. "…The vote reversed a unanimous vote by the then-NPA-controlled council in May 2002 not to change its zoning and development bylaw to allow slots, reaffirming its longstanding policy of not allowing the machines. "…The Plaza of Nations casino, a combined operation of the Grand and Royal Diamond casinos, with slots will raise $10 million (US$7.69 million) to $12 million (US$9.23 million) in revenue for the city, said the staff report. "The operators expect to open in May and operate 21 hours a day, seven days a week…" |
