Slain Tourist Recalled as Free Spirit

5 May 2003

LAS VEGAS – As reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal: ``A tourist found beaten to death Monday morning had celebrated her birthday at the Bellagio hours earlier, then took a cab alone to Binion's Horseshoe, police said.

``A cabdriver told homicide investigators that he picked up Simone Hirst, 39, at the Bellagio sometime early Monday, then dropped her off at Binion's Horseshoe, said police Lt. Tom Monahan.

``…Police had not caught Hirst's killer as of Thursday night.

``Authorities say Hirst and her 50-year-old boyfriend had feuded shortly before she left the Bellagio, where they had been staying together.

```There was pushing and shoving, and she was the aggressor,' police Sgt. Kevin Manning said of the confrontation.
``But the boyfriend, who has since returned home to Park City, Utah, and has been contacted by police, was not the last person seen with Hirst and is not considered a suspect, Manning said.
``…When police found Hirst's body, she was still fully clothed, her mother said. Her earrings and a Cartier watch, valued at up to $4,000, were among the missing items.
``…Anyone with information about the slaying can call police at 229-3521 or CrimeStoppers at 385-5555…"
