Six Arrested in Long Island Gambling Ring Bust

LONG ISLAND, New York – As reported by the New York Newsday: "Six men, including one alleged soldier in the Bonnano crime family, were arrested yesterday in connection with a $10-million sports gambling ring that prosecutors said used an offshore wire room in Costa Rica and then funneled the action to various locations on Long Island, including an Island Park bar and a Brookhaven Town golf course in Rocky Point.

"Surrounded by confiscated Joker Poker machines, guns, $122,000 in cash and betting lists filled in with nicknames such as 'Moose' and 'Tootall,' Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota announced the arrests, which he said made a significant dent in sports gambling on Long Island. All of the men were charged with promoting gambling, a felony that carries a sentence of up to 4 years in prison. Detectives also seized a safe, cocaine, computers, scratch pads, notebooks and an address book.

" …[Suffolk Deputy Insp. James] Burke said bettors typically placed their bets by telephone to an offshore wire room in Costa Rica. The wire room recorded their bets and transmitted them to runners on Long Island. Payoffs then were made at the Skybox Lounge, the golf course and other places such as private homes and cars…"
