Singapore Sets Casino Limits

3 January 2005

SINGAPORE – As reported by the Agence France-Presse: "A proposed casino project being explored by Singapore cannot be larger than 15,000 square metres (161,400 square feet) nor have more than 2,500 gaming machines, a government spokeswoman said.

"The government has invited potential investors to submit concept plans for a leisure and casino complex which has sparked a rare outcry from religious and civic groups concerned about the ill-effects of gambling.

"…As a comparison, the Bellagio and Venetian resorts in Las Vegas have casinos of 12,200 square metres and around 2,200 slot machines,

"…Should the nod be given for the project, there will be restrictions in place to prevent Singaporeans, particularly those who can least afford to fritter away their money, from becoming gambling addicts.

"These restrictions include a 100 Singapore dollar (61 US dollar) levy for a one-day entry into the casino and 2,000 dollars for an annual membership.

"…Investors have until February to submit their concepts which will outline the size of their investment, project feasibility and whether or not they want to include a gaming complex that will have to observe the government's social safeguards…"
