Singapore Official Supports Call for Casino Proposals

SINGAPORE – As reported by the Business Times: "An integrated casino would probably bring more 'buzz' to Singapore and create more tourist dollars, but it would also harm Singaporean society.

"This is why the government's move to call for project proposals was 'the right step', as it would allow the government to weigh the pros and cons before making a decision, Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew said yesterday.

"Speaking at a Tanjong Pagar GRC Chinese New Year Dinner held at the Radin Mas Community Club, MM Lee said that some Singaporeans could become addicted to gambling, and that there would be social ramifications for them and their families.

"…He said that the call for project proposals by the government would allow the government to assess the benefits and consider what safeguards to put in place…"
