Singapore Calls for Casino Ideas

29 December 2004

SINGAPORE -- As reported by the BBC: "Singapore has asked investors to submit proposals for a casino resort before deciding whether to allow gambling.

"Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Trade, said the government wanted a 'clear idea of the offer in terms of size of investment and tourism flows'.

"The idea of a casino has caused fears among religious groups and the government has assured that, if it is allowed, there will be restrictions.

"Various international casino operators have expressed interest in the project.

"...Asia's legal gambling industry is valued at about $14bn (£7.7bn) a year, and Singapore would like to have its share of this business.

"Such a casino would also help Singapore recover much of the $180m a year it is estimated that Singaporeans spend each year in neighbouring Malaysian casinos..."
