Shreveport Benefits Most From Gambling

20 April 2005

OUISIANA -- As reported by the Advocate: "The 14 riverboats and New Orleans land-based casino pumped more than $3.6 billion into the Louisiana economy during fiscal 2004, according to a study released Thursday by the Casino Association of Louisiana.

"The study, which was conducted by LSU economist Loren Scott, found that Shreveport/Bossier remained the biggest beneficiary from riverboat gambling. The five casinos created $1.6 billion in business sales and more than 20,000 jobs in metro Shreveport.

"...Seventy-four percent of the people who gamble in Shreveport/Bossier come from outside Louisiana, mainly Texas. That compares to a 1998 study that found out-of-state residents made up 44 percent of the gamblers in Shreveport/Bossier.

"This dependence on out-of-state visitors leaves the casinos near Louisiana's western border vulnerable.

"...In contrast to the bustling number of visitors who come to Shreveport, Baton Rouge's two local casinos almost entirely attract local gamblers.
