Shinnecock Casino Case Begins23 January 2004NEW YORK – As reported by Newsday: "The word 'casino' was uttered but once during a pretrial hearing yesterday as lawyers for the Shinnecock Nation gathered on one side of a U.S. District courtroom and attorneys for the federal, state and town of Southampton governments sat on the other. "…The 90-minute hearing, before Judge Thomas Platt, was a preliminary step before a trial that will determine whether the Shinnecocks should be allowed to open a casino on their land in Hampton Bays. "…In November, Platt announced he would rule on the case, a decision usually reserved for the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs. He then brought the U.S. Attorney General's office into the case as an involuntary plaintiff…" |
