Sheriffs Unite Against Video Gambling

NEWTON, North Carolina – As reported by the North Carolina Convenience Store List: "The sheriffs of Burke, Caldwell and Catawba counties are banding together to crack down on illegal gambling, according to a report in the Hickory (N.C.) Record.

"At a news conference, Catawba County Sheriff David Huffman announced the creation of the Tri-County Task Force on Vice and Gambling.

"The goal of the alliance is to eliminate gambling, especially in the form of illegal payouts from video poker machines, Huffman said.

"Video poker machines are common in convenience stores, small markets, pool halls and some bars. The machines are legal, but only if they don't pay cash for winnings. The law says the machines can only pay out $10 in store merchandise per customer per day.

"…To combat the problem, Clark and Huffman will pool resources with those of Burke County Sheriff John McDevitt. Three full-time, undercover officers have been assigned to the task force, Huffman said…"
