Sheriff's Role in Casino Promotion Under Investigation

News Brief: A judge plans to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate whether Orange County's sheriff violated state law by campaigning for a proposed casino while he was on duty.

PAOLI, Indiana -- As reported by the Associated Press: "A judge plans to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate whether Orange County's sheriff violated state law by campaigning for a proposed casino while he was on duty.

"Circuit Court Judge Larry Blanton said Monday he would appoint a special prosecutor this week to review the allegations against Sheriff Doyle Cornwell.

"Cornwell is chairman of Citizens for the Future of Orange County, which is supporting the casino proposal in a Nov. 4 referendum.

"...Some Orange County residents alleged Cornwell used his police car to deliver pro-casino signs to people who had requested them.

"...Cornwell said he had done nothing illegal..."
