Sheriff Under Investigation

ENGLISH, Indiana – As reported by the Associated Press: "A southern Indiana prosecutor will investigate whether Orange County's sheriff violated state law by campaigning for a proposed casino while he was on duty.

"Ronald Simpson, Crawford County's chief deputy prosecutor and former prosecutor of neighboring Harrison County, said Monday he had been appointed to review the allegations against Sheriff Doyle Cornwell.

"Some Orange County residents alleged Cornwell, who headed a group in favor of a riverboat casino at French Lick, used his police car to deliver signs to casino supporters before a Nov. 4 referendum.

"…State law prohibits state or county law-enforcement officers from engaging in any election-related activity while in uniform or on duty…"
