Sheriff to Run New Casino Police

HARTFORD CITY, Indiana -- Blackford County Sheriff Kevin Mahan has resigned to lead a new division of the Indiana Gaming Commission that will enforce gambling regulations and conduct investigations at the state's 10 riverboat casinos.

Mahan, 35, will oversee the Division of Enforcement and Integrity, a 113-member unit charged with checking the backgrounds of casino owners, employees and equipment suppliers in addition to other duties.

He starts his new job on July 6.

"This is an incredible, outstanding opportunity of a lifetime," Mahan told The Star Press of Muncie.

Mahan said was approached by Gov. Mitch Daniels' administration last week and decided to accept the position after much thought and prayer.

Blackford County GOP Chairwoman Kathy Goodspeed said the gaming position was a great opportunity for Mahan.

"He will be missed in Blackford County," she said.
