September visitor tally sets record14 November 2006LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- Enough people to populate a small nation poured into Las Vegas in September, setting a record for the month and keeping Southern Nevada on pace to attract 38.7 million visitors this year. The 3.2 million Las Vegas visitors in September, roughly the number of people who live in Armenia, represented a 3.3 percent increase over the previous September record set last year. The increase happened despite a 30 percent decline in convention visitors compared to 2005. "We've had some strong leisure demand coming into the fall," said John Piet, senior research analyst for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. In Laughlin the picture wasn't nearly as rosy. Visitor volume in the riverside gambling town fell to 251,770, nearly 16 percent lower than the previous September. In Mesquite, an emerging resort community in the northeast corner of Clark County, visitor volume for September rose nearly 11 percent from 2005 to 125,862. Copyright GamingWire.
