Seneca county rejects proposal15 August 2007NEW YORK -- As reported by the Syracuse Post-Standard: "The Seneca County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday rejected a proposed casino deal with the Cayuga Indian Nation but left the door open for striking a settlement down the road. "...Lawmakers from both counties are to hold separate meetings Thursday with Richard Rifkin, Gov. Eliot Spitzer's Indian affairs counsel, who played a pivotal role in moving the casino deal forward. The meetings will be in Syracuse. "Cayuga County has yet to vote on the initial settlement offer, which would permit the tribe to build and operate a Las Vegas-style casino, most likely in the Catskills. "In exchange, the Cayugas would consent to cap at 10,000 acres the amount of former ancestral land that they would strip off the tax rolls in both counties. The counties would also receive up to $15.3 million a year in casino revenues to offset property tax losses and the state would get $120 million annually. "Seneca County lawmakers rejected that offer and, instead, said they would support letting the tribe build a Class III casino elsewhere in the state, provided that the Cayugas would surrender all claims to sovereign land in both counties..." |
