Senator Walks with Striking Casino Workers21 October 2004ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey – As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "There was a new face walking the line in Local 54's strike against seven casinos Wednesday - U.S. Sen. Jon Corzine. "The New Jersey Democrat greeted pickets in front of Caesars Atlantic City, shaking hands as union workers cheered and chanted, 'Ease their pain.' He is among the first politicians to take a side publicly in the nearly 3-week-old strike. "…While Corzine made millions as chairman of Goldman Sachs, he grew up the son of a teacher and a farmer, Unite Here General President Bruce Raynor said. "…Corzine said he sees two major issues in the strike. "First is the contracting-out of services, which he said 'needs to be pushed back against.' "Second is having all of Unite Here's contracts end the same year. That is why the union wants a three-year contract, while the casinos are offering five-year deals. "…Corzine said he decided to take time off from campaigning for his party because 'I feel strongly about this. This is about the fundamental right of collective bargaining.'
