Senator Opposes Pennsylvania Law Changes

HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania – As reported by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: "Proposed changes to Pennsylvania's 3-month-old gambling law would remove a provision requiring that casino companies purchase slot machines from in-state distributors.

"That revision, according to state Sen. Vince Fumo and Democratic colleagues, could cost Pennsylvanians 1,000 jobs -- sales, maintenance and installation jobs, among others.

"But Republicans say the requirement, part of the original slots law, is unconstitutional, because it affords in-state companies business opportunities unavailable to out-of-state ones.

"Fumo, a powerful Philadelphia Democrat who last week excoriated Senate Republicans for denying Democrats the chance to amend the proposed slot machine changes, also said yesterday that the revision would discourage meaningful minority participation in the new slots industry beyond 'parking cars and cleaning' casinos…"
