Security Tightened at Mississippi Casinos15 October 2003MISSISSIPPI – As reported by the Associated Press: "Law enforcement and security have been beefed up in and around Tunica County and Lula casinos in response to 21 armed robberies this year, state officials said Tuesday. "…Officials suspect some of the robbers may have been in collusion with casino employees. Next week, Larry Gregory, executive director of the Mississippi Gaming Commission, and his agents will interview casino employees that work in surveillance, security, the cashier cages and the drop teams that handle the money from the cages. "…Armed bandits, most of them young men and residents of Tunica County, have robbed 10 Northwest Mississippi casinos - nine in Tunica County and one in Lula. In many cases, the gunmen were masked, entered the casino in the pre-dawn hours and robbed a cashier. The robbers have taken more than $1.3 million. The biggest heist occurred in July, when Sam's Town Casino was robbed of $760,000. "…Additional state troopers and agents of the Mississippi Gaming Commission will be assigned to cover the 10 casinos. The Tunica County Sheriff's Department is hiring 15 more deputies to provide armed security for the casinos, whose own guards are not armed…" |
