Security Firm Cancels Iowa Gambling Study22 October 2004DES MOINES, Iowa -- As reported by the Associated Press:"A company awarded a $90,000 state contract to conduct a study on the socio-economic impact of gambling in Iowa has canceled the contract because of controversy over its ties to the casino industry, state lawmakers announced. "Michael Duffy, chairman and chief executive of Per Mar Security Services, said in a letter sent to Iowa Senate Majority Leader Stewart Iverson, R-Dows, that recent allegations that its business dealings with casinos could bias the firm's ability to gather facts are 'unfounded, speculative and irresponsible.' "...The University of Northern Iowa, the No. 2 bidder for the contract, has been notified it has now been chosen to perform the study, Iverson said." |
