Second union files to represent Foxwoods employees

MASHANTUCKET, Connecticut -- As reported by the Connecticut Day: "The International Union of Operating Engineers has filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board stating it has the support of a 'substantial number' of Foxwoods employees who are in favor of union representation.

"The union would represent 262 workers within the engineering department at the resort casino, according to William Lynn, the lead organizer with the IUOE Local 30, based in Richmond Hill, N.Y.

"The workers in the proposed bargaining unit include in-house skilled maintenance workers like electricians, plumbers, painters and HVAC workers, Lynn said.

"Lynn said workers sought out the union after poker and table game dealers pushed for representation by the United Auto Workers union.

"...The IUOE began collecting signatures on union-authorization cards from maintenance engineers at Foxwoods Resort Casino last fall.

"...The tribe had questioned the National Labor Relations Board's jurisdiction over the casino and its workers, citing sovereign immunity as a tribal nation. The NLRB threw out that objection..."
