Second slot applicant drops bid

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania – As reported by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: "…The second of two applicants for a 500-slot machine resort casino license dropped its bid Tuesday. That leaves the state without anyone seeking its two resort licenses.

"'I don't think anybody can make it work,' said Denis Rudd, tourism professor at Robert Morris University.

"…Fayette County's Nemacolin Woodlands Resort withdrew its application yesterday, saying it could not reach an agreement with the state Gaming Control Board over who would be allowed to play in its proposed casino.

"State regulations limit resort casino patrons to registered guests or people who have spent at least $25 on amenities at the resort.

"Lawmakers wrote the law so resort casinos would not compete for customers with larger slot parlors, officials said. But the conditions, some experts said, could be too strict to attract casino operators.

"…Separately, the owners of Seven Springs ski resort in Somerset County dropped their bid for a resort casino license in October. They also partly own the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team, and cited an unresolved conflict of interest with Major League Baseball…"
