Schwarzenegger pushes to ratify compacts

SACRAMENTO, California – As reported by the Press Enterprise: "Gov. Schwarzenegger warned Wednesday that the Assembly's continued refusal to ratify renegotiated casino agreements between the state and five tribes in Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego counties will 'without a doubt' mean less state money for 'vulnerable citizens.'

"Schwarzenegger, who will release a revised 2007-08 budget later this month, said Assembly Democrats need to choose between labor union allies who oppose the gaming deals and the millions of residents who would benefit from the money generated by the agreements.

"…The state Senate approved the agreements, known as compacts, last month. But the Assembly seems in no hurry to consider the deals.

"…Democratic leaders contend that the compacts lack adequate protections for casino workers trying to unionize as well as failing to ensure independent audits of slot machine revenue, among other objections.

"…Schwarzenegger's January budget proposal assumed that the deals would yield $506 million in 2007-08. Last week, his office revised that figure to $313.5 million…"
