Schwarzenegger Opposes Effort to Repeal Casino Amendment

SACRAMENTO, California – As reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune: "In the political firestorm that engulfed his approval of a massive Indian casino in the San Francisco Bay area, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger repeatedly said a local congressman made him do it.

"Rep. George Miller, D-Martinez, had quietly pushed through an amendment that skirted a lengthy, uncertain process and gave the Lytton tribe an almost undeniable right to conduct Nevada-style gambling at a struggling card club it purchased in San Pablo.

"…Yesterday, Schwarzenegger astonished casino critics when he weighed in against an effort to repeal the Miller amendment and postpone indefinitely the construction of a big new casino in San Pablo.

"The Republican governor said in a letter to U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., that he opposes her measure, S. 1648, which would rescind the Miller amendment and special federal trust status that permits tribal gaming on the site.

"…Feinstein's legislation, he warned, 'will destroy the trust which has been built with the Lytton and other tribal governments . . . throughout the nation.'

"…A spokesman for the tribe said it didn't ask the governor to intervene…"
