Schwarzenegger Balks at Tribal Casino Compact

CALIFORNIA – As reported by the (Marysville-Yuba City)Appeal-Democrat: "Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is 'not inclined ... at this time' to enter into compact negotiations with Enterprise Rancheria for its Yuba County casino because the tribe lacks 'adequate' community support, says his legal affairs secretary.

"Peter Siggins offered those views in a recent letter to Yuba County Supervisor Dan Logue, who in July urged the governor not to negotiate with the tribe until it gets 40 acres along Forty Mile Road into trust.

"…In Yuba County, he wrote, 'It does not appear that there is adequate support in the local community. Our calls to local government entities in the area have confirmed that many are opposed to the tribe's proposed casino.'

"…Enterprise Rancheria is currently in a lengthy process to have the federal government place the 40 acres in Yuba County into trust for the tribe.

"…The tribe's attorney, James Cohen, said Enterprise Rancheria is 'not concerned about Mr. Siggins' letter. Support remains overwhelming for the resort hotel and casino project and the hundreds of good jobs it will bring to Yuba County.'

"…Two years ago, the tribe and its financial backer, Yuba County Entertainment LLC, released a poll showing that about 60 percent of Yuba County voters supported the hotel-casino project…"
