School Cashes in on Casino Boom

ROCHESTER, New York – As reported by the Democrat & Chronicle: "With layoffs at Eastman Kodak Co. and other Rochester mainstays making headlines, is there a silver lining in the possibility of a casino in the area?

"A Fairport native feels there are real opportunities for Rochester residents in the state's growing casino industry, either here someday or elsewhere.

"Miguel Brache, a 1992 Nazareth College graduate who became a dealer at Turning Stone Casino when he could not find work after graduation, has opened a training center in Henrietta for people who want to try their hand at dealing blackjack or running a craps table at a swank casino.

"…The Casino Dealing School of Rochester opened in January and already has two classes of recent graduates, several who are interviewing (known as auditioning in the trade) for jobs. The school is accredited by New York state and is the only area program less than an hour's drive from the city.

"The Casino Career Training School in Buffalo offers classes in casino games as well as slot-machine repair. Niagara Community College offers a casino dealing class in cooperation with Niagara College in Ontario, Canada. Some casinos also offer classes for prospective employees.

"…'It's more difficult than you think it would be,' said Brache, who worked at Turning Stone as a craps dealer and floor supervisor for eight years.

"…Beth Deighan, president of Casinocareers.com, an online job-placement agency, said demand for casino workers is expanding because the number of gambling establishments is multiplying.

"…Deighan said dealers can make a good living. They make between $4 and $8 an hour plus tips that can range between $10 and $30 an hour. Some average more than $50 an hour in tips, she said…"
