Scholars blast government's casino plan

MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica -- As reported by the Jamaica Observer: "A proposal by the Government and tourism interests to give Jamaicans access to the large-scale casino gambling to be introduced in western Jamaica soon, earned the ire of University of the West Indies (UWI) scholars who said the decision was not informed by the best interests of the country.

"The heated difference of opinion which played out yesterday at the UWI's one-day policy conference in this resort city to examine the impact of gaming on the society, saw Diaram Ramjee Singh, lecturer in Managerial Economics at the UWI, blasting the Government's decision which was articulated by minister of tourism Ed Bartlett earlier during the first session. "...The Government is on verge of introducing casino gambling through a proposed investment of US$6.8 billion at the Harmony Cove and Celebration Jamaica resorts.

"It is expected that other high-end resorts will also apply for and be granted licences to operate large-scale casinos..."
