Saskatoon Rejects Casino Plan23 October 2003SASKATCHEWAN – As reported by the Saskatoon Star Phoenix: "Voters in Saskatoon have rejected plans for a downtown casino in a plebiscite held in conjunction with Wednesday's Saskatchewan municipal elections. "Saskatoon voters had long waits to cast their ballots at some overcrowded polling stations and there was a shortage of ballots at other stations in the city as more than 50 per cent of the electorate turned out to vote. "But residents who fought the campaign to keep the casino out of the downtown core were ecstatic with the end result. "…Voters in Swift Current, however, gave a green light to a casino in their south west city through a referendum. "…Saskatoon business leaders were disappointed by the voters' rejection of the casino. "…Todd Brandt, CEO of Tourism Saskatoon, said he regretted the city lost an opportunity to bolster its convention industry. "…The Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority and the Saskatoon Tribal Council had proposed a destination casino for downtown Saskatoon. The $65- million, three-storey, 105,000-square-foot casino was to feature a showroom, 50 table games, 750 coin slot machines and a six-storey parkade…" |
