Saskatchewan Official Imposes Casino Deal

SASKATCHEWAN – As reported by the Saskatoon Star Phoenix: "The settlement will see SIGA pay Prairieland Park $2.6 million annually for 30 years in exchange for closing its casino and also offer an assurance of employment for Praireland's casino staff.

"The parties must comply with the decision before final approval is granted for the new Dakota Dunes casino to be built on the Whitecap Dakota First Nation on Highway 219 south of Saskatoon, said Eric Cline, minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA), during a media conference.

"The announcement brings the project, stalled by the negotiations and changes to the size of the proposed casino, closer to fruition.

"…According to the document, Prairieland Park will continue operation of Marquis Downs, including off-track betting and up to 12 video lottery terminals as part of the provincial VLT program, along with games of chance during the annual Saskatoon Prairieland Exhibition.

"Emerald employees who do not obtain employment at the casino or with SIGA in Saskatoon by the closing date of Emerald Casino will be paid a lump sum equivalent to three weeks' wages at the individual's current wage per year of service.

"…SIGA and Prairieland Park have been in negotiations to settle the matter since 2002…"
