Saskatchewan Chief Fears Casino Delay

SASKATCHEWAN – As reported by the Saskatoon Star Phoenix: "Construction season is almost here and Whitecap First Nation Chief Darcy Bear has concerns about the delay in getting a licence for the casino he hopes will anchor a Saskatoon-to-Lake Diefenbaker tourist corridor, he said Thursday.

"His worries were heightened this week when Industry and Resource Minister Eric Cline told delegates to a Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities convention the government is waiting for Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority (SIGA) to prove another casino won't saturate the province's market.

"Proponents for the casino have hired KPMG to do an independent study on market conditions and the province has that in hand, Bear said in an interview.

"…The Whitecap band is geared up to upgrade infrastructure on the reserve south of Saskatoon in order to accommodate the $40-million casino, he said.

"'We are, basically, waiting for the licence. Until we get that, we can't start construction.'…"
