Saratoga Raceway Donates to County

NEW YORK – As reported by the Albany Times-Union: "The video lottery terminals at Saratoga Gaming and Raceway in Saratoga Springs have produced a $50,000 donation to Saratoga County to establish a foundation.

"The harness track and the Saratoga Harness Horsepersons Association each donated $25,000 to the county. The creation of the foundation with the funding from the racino operations was promised in 2002 when the Board of Supervisors approved a local law permitting the introduction of VLTs in the county.

"…The state legislation approving VLTs gave Saratoga County the option of refusing to permit them at the harness track. A lobbying effort by the track, harness industry and union representing workers at the track led to the Board of Supervisors allowing the VLTs at the harness track.

"George Karam, president of the SHHS, said a decision was made to have the track and horsepersons association contribute equally to provide the $50,000.

"…The foundation will have a five-member board. It will include the Board of Supervisors chairman, another county appointee, a member named by the mayor of Saratoga Springs, a track representative and a representative from SHHA…"
