Santa Ysabel Plans Casino5 July 2004SANTA YSABEL INDIAN RESERVATION, California – As reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune: "Nestled in the heart of San Diego County's northeastern mountains are thousands of acres that have gone mostly undisturbed for 9,000 years. "…Running through miles of brush is a 3-foot barbed-wire fence that separates the Santa Ysabel band of Diegueño Indians' reservation from the rest of the world. "After losing most of their land to conquerors, the Santa Ysabel tribe received ownership rights of more than 15,000 acres in 1893. After more than a century of living in poverty, the tribe is completing plans to build a mountaintop casino. "…The 70,000-square-foot casino will be on Volcan Mountain overlooking Lake Henshaw. "…With no more than 349 slot machines, the tribe will continue receiving shared revenue from the larger casinos…" |
