Sands parking garage comes down

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey -- As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "For a moment, the old building seemed to defy the laws of gravity.

"It shuddered after a series of thunderous explosions tore through the superstructure shortly after 7 a.m. Thursday. But ever so briefly, it didn't fall.

"Then, after another round of sharper, ear-piercing bangs from even more explosives, the inevitable happened. The parking garage collapsed in a giant heap of concrete, followed by a billowing dust cloud that covered the rubble.

"...With that, another remnant of the old Sands Casino Hotel disappeared.

"But unlike the Sands' spectacular, fireworks-choreographed nighttime implosion in October, the casino's old 10-story garage came down Thursday without fanfare.

"...The building was imploded to clear more space for a proposed $1.5 billion megaresort that Las Vegas-based Pinnacle Entertainment Inc. plans to build on the former Sands site starting late next year. A grand opening is tentatively scheduled for 2012..."
