Sands gets ready for demolition31 July 2007ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey -- As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "Any myths or superstitions about the numbers 777 being eternally lucky were shattered Monday by Bryan Locuson and his wrecking machine. "Using a giant Komatsu excavator's imposing crab-like claw, Locuson single-handedly began destroying the Sands Casino Hotel's decorative facade that contained kitschy, gambling-themed icons — including the supposedly 'lucky triple 7s.' "The towering 777 icon depicted a jackpot on a Sands slot machine. No match for the excavator's power, the numbers came crashing down in a shower of glass, plastic and metal. Then Locuson pried off oversized replicas of a champagne bottle and a saxophone in quick order. "...Demolition crews are tearing off the Sands' facade and gutting the building's interior in preparation for a spectacular implosion this fall that will bring down the 21-story hotel tower, the old casino complex and an adjacent parking garage. "...Pinnacle, a Las Vegas-based gaming company, is redeveloping the old Sands for a new $1.5 billion casino scheduled to open in 2011 or 2012. Reminiscent of the splashy implosions on the Las Vegas strip in recent years, Pinnacle is planning to give the Sands a grand sendoff complete with an extravagant fireworks display sometime this October, pending final state and local regulatory approvals..."
