Sands gaming chips destroyed

"In minutes, millions of dollars of Sands gaming chips disappeared Wednesday. Poof. Gone forever.

"...Workers poured the chips into metal containers. Then a forklift operator dumped them into a vat at the back of a tractor-trailer containing a hammer-like crunching machine. A loud rumbling sound was heard inside the truck. Then little bits of plastic emerged on a conveyor belt and fell harmlessly into cardboard boxes.

"...In all, 457,000 chips valued at $61.2 million were destroyed Wednesday by Pinnacle Entertainment Inc., the owner of the defunct Sands. The gaming chips had to be taken out of circulation because the Sands is no longer in business.

"...Before the Sands closed, collectors and ordinary gamblers were able to buy as many of the gaming chips as they wanted. Some of them are now up for auction on eBay..."
