San Pablo Casino Vote in Doubt

CALIFORNIA – As reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune: "Several Senate Democrats said Wednesday they would not ratify Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's deal to create an Indian casino in San Pablo during the legislative session scheduled to end Friday, a stand that could leave the controversial project's fate in limbo for months.

"Despite a weekend attempt by the Lytton Band of Pomo Indians to appease critics by halving their original plans for a 5,000-slot casino, senators emerged from meetings with administration officials and tribal leaders saying that their concerns over the project could not be addressed in time to win their approval.

"…State Sen. Don Perata, D-Oakland, who was elected Tuesday to replace Burton as Senate leader, said 'there were probably more questions raised than answered.' He said he would be surprised to see a vote this week.

"…Still, heralding a potential showdown later in the week, Schwarzenegger's office did not back off Wednesday, again calling upon the Democratic- controlled Legislature to approve the governor's multifaceted agreements with five tribes, including the Lytton Band…"
