San Pablo Casino Hearing to be Held

10 January 2005

SACRAMENTO, California -- As reported by the Contra Costa Times: "San Pablo's mayor, city manager and police chief are expected to join state and tribal officials in Sacramento on Wednesday for a hearing on a compact for a 2,500 slot machine Nevada-style casino.

"The hearing will be hosted by the Senate Committee on Governmental Organization led by Sen. Dean Florez, D-Shafter.

"A morning session will include a presentation on the history of the Lytton band of Pomo Indians, the Sonoma County-based tribe that bought a 91/2-acre site on San Pablo Avenue at San Pablo Dam Road as its reservation on the basis of a rider inserted into a 2000 congressional appropriations bill by Rep. George Miller, D-Martinez. A card room currently occupies the site.

"An afternoon session will address the compact, which could net the state $100 million a year or more from a 25 percent cut of casino profits. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed the compact with the tribe in August but the Legislature has yet to ratify it.

"...Consultants have been gathering signatures in support of the casino at various places in West Contra Costa County. A bus will take supporters to Sacramento..."
