Rush of Gamblers Greets Sands Macau18 May 2004MACAU – As reported by Reuters: "Las Vegas gaming magnate Sheldon Adelson threw open the doors to his sprawling new casino in Macau on Tuesday, breaking a lucrative monopoly on the business held by powerful local tycoon Stanley Ho for the last 40 years. "Hours before the gleaming $240 million Sands Macao was opened to gamblers, thousands of people, most of them visitors from mainland China, had lined up outside the building covered with gold-coloured glass. "When the casino finally opened in mid-afternoon, managers had to briefly shut the doors to prevent a stampede by punters eager for their first taste of Vegas-style glitz and glamour.
