Ruling to Clear Way for Detroit Casino Plans

8 April 2004

DETROIT, Michigan – As reported by the Detroit News: "A federal judge is expected to rule within a week on a deal that would clear an obstacle to the construction of permanent casinos.

"An agreement between the city of Detroit, Greektown and MotorCity casinos and the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians is in the hands of U.S. District Judge Robert Holmes Bell, who needs to approve it before building can start.

"...Greektown and MotorCity still face hurdles. They need rezoning permits from the city and MGM could appeal Bell's decision.

"…Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick promised in his Feb. 24 State of the City address that if the Detroit City Council removed its objection to the deal, "we can have shovels in the ground and cranes in the air within 30 days."

"…The city still hopes the three permanent casinos and hotels will be ready in time for the 2006 Super Bowl…"
