Ruling delays Foxwoods' plans22 November 2007PENNSYLVANIA -- As reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer: "Opponents of Philadelphia's budding casino projects scored their first court success yesterday with a state Supreme Court ruling that likely further delays Foxwoods Casino's plans to build in South Philadelphia. "The Supreme Court yesterday rejected Foxwoods' petition to force the city to approve zoning permits that would allow its $560 million slots parlor on Columbus Boulevard in the Pennsport section of South Philadelphia. "It sent the case - on an expedited basis - to Philadelphia Common Pleas Court for a resolution. "It's a procedural ruling that doesn't mean eventual victory for casino opponents - and Foxwoods has yet another pending petition before the court that could give it a legal avenue to build. "But it means delay, observers said, as Foxwoods and City Council wrestle through the appeals process, likely all the way back to the Supreme Court. Mayor Street has supported building the casinos, but Mayor-elect Michael Nutter has said he supported moving them away from neighborhoods. Council has not approved site plans or zoning for the projects.
