Ruling bad news for Shawnee tribe

31 January 2008

MONROE, Ohio -- As reported by the Oxford Press: "A recent ruling by The U.S. Department of Interior not to accept land into a trust for a casino at the request of the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe in Akwesasne, N.Y., could prove a crushing blow to an American Indian tribe planning to take the same route in Monroe.

"In December 1998, the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe submitted an application to acquire in trust 29.32 acres in Monticello, N.Y., for a gaming facility and hotel.

"...'I think that's really a death knell for any possible approval by the Bush administration — the future administration, of course, might change their position — to be receptive to any attempt to place land in Ohio in trust for an Oklahoma tribe. I think it's fair to say that this is not a welcome turn of events for the Eastern Shawnee of Oklahoma tribe.'..."
