Ruling Allows Telephone Betting to be Advertised

NEW BRITAIN, Connecticut -- As reported by the Associated Press: " A New Britain Superior Court trial referee has ruled that telephone betting services may be advertised during simulcast horse racing in Connecticut.

"Autotote Enterprises Inc. last year sought a decision from the state Division of Special Revenue on whether advertising telephone betting services is permissible.

"The agency barred the advertising, prompting Autotote to seek a court ruling. State law permits televising races and accepting telephone bets, but officials insisted that Autotote could not advertise telephone betting with the simulcast, said Robert Tobin, a lawyer for Autotote.

"'We say there's no such prohibition. It would probably be an unconstitutional infringement of free speech rights,' he said Friday. 'We could not find anything in the statute that says we can't advertise.' ..."
